With the support of the RBC Future Launch Community Challenge program, the Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society (SWSS) is offering a project named The River Speaks: Learn, Create, Share and Grow. The goals of this project are: 1. to share a common theme of Watershed health with various community member and 2. assist participants in expressing their thoughts around this theme.
Learn: The River will speak to discuss different Environmental and Watershed related issues.
Create: Participants will be encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings on the discussed subjects.
Share: The resulting creative pieces will then be shared with others using different media.
Grow: Offer/Guide the community toward healthy watershed practices and elevate a sense of pride and belonging to something we all share.
My Friend the River will be carried out as part of the The River Speaks project. My Friend the River will be a collection of poems accompanied by photographs created by community members. The participants can take part in 3 different online workshops (via Zoom) to spark their creativity. SWSS will collect the creations during summer 2020 and will produce a printed version of a booklet.
- A round table discussion to talk about why a healthy environment matters to us, environmental changes and how we envision the future.
- One workshop to teach the basics of photography, hosted by Amy Allcock. A part of this workshop will be dedicated to teaching how to take better photos using mobile devices (i.e. phones or tablets) so anyone can participate and take beautiful pictures!
- Another workshop will teach the essentials of poetry in a safe and relaxed environment. Poetry can be an excellent way to express you feeling or tell a story. Anyone can write a poem. Our host, Mandy Huser, will teach you the basics and will provide some fun exercises to get you going!
Each workshop will be available for seniors, youth and to another group open to the public.
